One October Saturday
in a Galaxy Far Far Away

A few of RootsWeb's servers
Some of RootsWeb's servers.
For many people RootsWeb is an area they go to in order to see if there may be information on their ancestors or to see if there is an area set up for their other special interests. These pages are for those folks who wonder what RootsWeb looks like in physical form behind the scenes.
The following snapshots depict a pictorial history of a non-typical day at one of RootsWeb's Network Operation Centers (NOCs). This is one of 5 NOCs RootsWeb maintains -- all in varying degrees of sophistication, along with several ad hoc NOCs in other locations. Your RootsWeb donations have helped to put these NOCs together and your continued support will enable RootsWeb to continue and to grow with the industry.

What a depressing way to start a day Why does Randy look so forlorn? Well, October 2nd dawned over California bringing with it news that the new WWW server was not working. Dr. Brian Leverich, Randy Winch and Karen Isaacson set out from their homes to the NOC (a 3-hour drive) to see what the problem was. As Brian and Randy tightened, reseated and/or replaced various cables, cards, and terminators, Karen snapped pictures.

Fourteen hours later, they were finally home and the WWW server was up and running again.

Pondering the problem.

Monitor, keyboard, KVM switches galore.

Getting disconnected, back of the rack.

Getting disconnected, up close.

A switch and two servers (Cost about $32,000, cables not included -- worth $62,000+ retail)
