ROOTS-L Resources: Internet Resources for Genealogy
Library catalogs, FTP sites, GENSERV, MELVYL and more... These files
provide an overview of a variety of genealogical resources on the
Internet.
faq.www:
Some good URLs for genealogy on the WWW, and a FAQ about the WWW.
A more current version of the WWW FAQ may be found on
sunsite.unc.edu.
faq.general:
FAQ from the soc.genealogy.misc. Good stuff.
faq.index:
Overview of the various ROOTS-L FAQ files. Probably more up-to-date
and less wordy than this WWW page.
faq.melvyl:
Melvyl is the On-Line Catalog of the University of California, including
the large Sutro genealogy library in San Francisco -- this article
tells you how to access Melvyl via telnet. A longer demonstration
of melvyl is available in
genealog.melvyl.
genealog.ftpcac:
A description of the FTP site at ftp.cac.psu.edu for genealogical programs and
files. Go there now?
genealog.lib-addr:
If you're here via the Web (and how else would you be here?),
this file may have limited appeal for you. Then again, the list
of libraries with Internet Online Bibliographic Databases is
nice. But the point of the file is to give you their numeric
IP addresses, for those of you whose sites don't support names
lookups... (Such as???)
genealog.libcontx:
Dated 29 October 1992, a list of
contacts for Internet On-line Bibliographic Databases.
genealog.photoftp:
Smithsonian photographs available from the
Smithsonian's Office of Printing and Photographic Services.
The FTP site
may only be open during business hours?, but you can
still electronically visit
the Smithsonian.
