His mother, Mary Ann, was born in Ohio of parents born in New York. Belive her family moved back to New York. The HURLBUT Genealogy gives her surname as HUBBARD but I think this may be an error. URL: http://people.ne.mediaone.net/aemorrow/fg01/fg01_042.html

QRYTEXT: I'm looking for information on John BINGHAM, who lived in McGrawville and/or Candor, NY in the 1820s and 1830s. He was born 26 Feb 1812 in Connecticut. About 1835 in NY, he married Sally HEAD. In the 1830 census, John is listed next door to a woman named Mary Ann HEAD, but it's not known if this is a relation. John and Sally moved to Illinois about 1848 after having 5 kids in NY: William, Mary Jane, Charles, Elizabeth, Arzenew. They lived 5-8 years in Lake Co, IL and had Almira and Melvin before moving to Bremer Co, IA. Sally died, probably in IL abt 1855, and John married the mother of his son-in-law Jane WAGNER (Moon), who may also have been from the same area in NY.

John's parents were Elisha BINGHAM and Tryphenia OLNEY. They were still living in McGrawville in the 1850 and 1860 censuses.

I'm looking for any information on the Head family and any specifics on the Bingham family in NY. I can provide John's ancestry if anyone is interested.

Thanks

Vicki,

I would love to help with this, but I am afraid this is not a time for me to

do so. If I could do something that would take only about 3 to 4 hours over

the Christmas break, I will have some time to devote then.

BTW. I don't know if you remember me, but we are related (I believe we did

establish the relationship at another time). My

great-great-great-grandmother Jane (TITUS) CORNWELL, of Moravia, NY, moved

there from Cortland Co. and Greene Co., NY. She was descended from Benjamin

and Jane (TITUS) TITUS.

Since I have lived in Florida for almost 20 years, I have been interested in

the Titus branch that ended up down here in Florida and founded Titusville,

FL. This was a Col. TITUS (forget his first name, but retrieved a lot of

information that is in the Titusville branch of the Brevard Co. Public

Library) and it would take me some time to dig out how they fit into the

line. Apparently, there is a descendant of that family still living up in

Daytona Beach. I contacted them, but did not hear anything back.

Thanks.

Subject: Re: Schermerhorn family, Cortland Co., NY & Asa Titus

Dear Ms. Titus: Thank you for your message re: possible volunteer to obtain

Ethel (Kellerman) Schermerhorn obit., Cortland Co., NY. Regarding Asa Titus

- Mary "Ellen" (nee, Alford) Titus, have many of his (their) descendants

accounted for, but not all -- Alford side of my family was a bit weak on

genealogy / family history and allegedly Aunt "Ellen" was one least likely to

dwell on family details. Would like to know more, if possible, of Asa's

ancestors, & siblings -- have tried to do some research here at Indianapolis

(Indiana State Library) but have not had much success with his lineage -- am

just glad I''ve got as much as I have from cousins who used to live at Roann,

IN -- now in Oklahoma. Have always wondered where Asa & Ellen met ?-- here

in Indiana, or out in Iowa where her dad (my first great-grandfather) died.

--or back in Ohio where they had lived until beyond 1880 census when they

moved to Iowa. Her dad died 1884 in Iowa -- and little over 4 years later

(1888) Asa and "Ellen" were married here in Indiana. Her mom then remarried

next for about a six-month marriage which took place at Miami County,

Indiana, before divorcing. Her mom then remarried for another time (1991)

again marriage taking place at Miami County, Indiana, to a civil-war veteran

who lived in Kosciusko County and Marshall County, Indiana, areas. If you

need any Indiana assistance, please let me know. Yours, Richard Alford.

Would like any and all info on him, wife, children, grandchildren etc. Thanks Annette Campbell, (anncamp@linkny.com)

Thank you so much! I feel pretty good about Reuben myself... Not that that's

a proper way to conduct a genealogical search... But it can pay off. Phineas

did. I suspect that most of Reuben's offspring moved to IL. Some seem to

have gone on to IA. (This is assuming he is in fact the father of Phineas,

Amos, Jesse, etc.) This seems to be one of the lines that Ken Graves does

not know about. I've been keeping him informed of what I find when I find

it, hoping that on his end he's doing the same.

This Graves thing is really baffling! The names are odd, and I keep finding

them in different places, but can't make any definite connection. I think

we've got younger forgotten syndrome in this line somewhere. There are a lot

of similar names in Onondaga County as well, which, if I understand

correctly is where Cortland County came from. Probably cousins.

The success stories are great, aren't they! I can't even tell you how

excited I was to find out that Juliette hadn't come west on the orphan

train!

Thanks again for your help! Good luck poking around!

QRYTEXT: Looking for information on Peter Secord ,born September 15,1726,New Rochelle, New York. His father was Daniel Secord married to Catherine Mabie. He served in the American revolution with Butler's Rangers.

The information I am looking for is about his first wife Abigail Fowler whom he apparently married in New York. They had 4 children one of whom is my descendant Daniel Secord born 1756 also in Cortland Manor Westchester county, New York. The other children were Abigail, Silas and Fanny?.

Peter escaped to Fort Niagara and was joined later by his children . There is no mention of a wife at this point but later he married the widow Abigail Emmett and they had several more children.

Peter died April 1818 in Yarmouth ,Elgin County, Ontario. I am trying to get a copy of his will at the moment.

Apparently Peter Secord lived until he was 103 years old.

These Secords are descendants of Ambroise Sicard born in 1631 in Mornac France.A French Hugenot family that escaped from France to New York .

Any information would be great as well as I would be willing to share what I already have..

Dear Ms. Titus:

I ran into your Cortland County Web Page while doing some research

regarding the Tenth N.Y. Cavalry, of which my Great-great grandfather B.

Frank Rice was a member during the Civil War. I did not see any history

regarding my Rice family and its relationship to Cortland County. I was born

in Cortland (1949), and my family moved to Florida in 1956, although I try to

return to Cortland every year or so. I have some details regarding my Rice

Family and would be happy to provide you with the same if you desire. By way

of general information, Moses Rice, his family, and servants moved to the

Cortland area, I believe Solon in the mid 1700's, his name is found on the

monument to American Revolution soldiers in Cortland, according to the

records that I have he was stationed at Fort Ticonderoga, for a brief time.

His son, perhaps grandson, Rufus Rice was the sheriff of Cortland County and

later the Justice of the Peace. I have his original judgment book regarding

the mid 1800 period of time, (that I have provided be left to the Cortland

Historical Society in my will, hopefully you won't be getting it anytime

soon). Rufus' son Benjamin Franklin Rice (Frank) fought at Gettysburg, I

have what I believe to be the Bible stand from the Tenth N.Y. Calvary, also

left to your society. Frank's son Irving was The Assemblyman from Corland

1918-1933, I have a great deal of his materials that I may one day turn over

to the Society, if an adequate interest is not shown by one of my chidren (

the youngest is now 15). At any rate, I have some considerable information

regarding my Cortland County ancestors, and would be happy to provide you

with the same, if you so desire.

Vicki,

Yes you are right with the history of chenango, Co Daniel Shipman and Sarah

Eastman came out of Roxbury CT in 1803 to pitcher N.Y. one of those 5 sons

was Joseph I do have a marriage date of 1841 on Joseph and Hannah I think

that Hannah was one of the Virgil bunch. If they were married in 1841 and

left to come to Illinois in1853 that would be 12 years in Virgil ?? I don't

know where they were married.?? Maybe I could write Mrs. Bays to see if she

could come up with something. The other sons went on to Rochester,N.Y. One

was a famous surgeon in the civil war. It's funny there is no trace of

Hannah in Virgil. She is buried here in DeKalb

as is Joseph. The other Shipmans in Cortland,Co I'm not aware of.

Thanks Vicki- What I am trying to do is connect this family with some

family at the beginning orthe end or the middle with something I

already have in my computer or a publication I may have. So far no

luck. Will keep looking unless they are an isolated family that is

independant of anything I have.

Vickie,

I'd like to add my name to researchers in Cortland Co and vicinity. WHITE is

primary, but if you add various lines, kindly add HOAG, FULLER, DAVIS, CLARK,

KEENE, GALLUP, BURDICK, ROCKWELL, WILCOX, SWETT/SWEET

Family I'm certain lived in the area began with ICHABOD WHITE m. RHODA HOAG,

children DAVID (m. ELEANOR DAVIS) and PHOEBE (m. THOMAS SNOW), family later

lived in McKean Co, and some in Potter Co, PA. Ichabod was son of William,

son of William, son of Andrew; Rhoda was d/o Daniel Hoag and Susannah Jones

from Oblong, Dutchess Co, NY area.

I'm still looking for burial sites for Ichabod and Rhoda, both of whom are

purported by some to be buried in Cortland Co, Tully/Prebble/Norwich area,

but Ichabods Rev War papers indicate he died in Rensslaer or Columbia Co, NY.

Rhoda's daughter Phoebe married a Thomas Snow and Rhoda lived with her in

her last few years of life. Descendants of this family are in DAR, have

papers, but I have been unsuccessful so far in locating them.

I'm guessing that David White, son of Ichabod and Rhoda was born in this area

and that they later moved to McKean Co, PA. I'm still wondering if they had

more children; it seems likely given my family's um fecundity and enthusiasm

to produce heirs even into their 60s, laugh. (The men that is; and many of

them had several families.) I believe that David and P. Adeline Keene are

both buried in McKean Co, PA; cousin has verified those sites.

I recall your name, so I know that I've written to you before and I think you

told me we're different families, but if any of this rings a bell, it would

be a kindness if you would respond personally.

David's son was ARVIN CLARK and his son (my grandfather) ARVIN RAY WHITE. I

noticed an Arvin Hoag this round of "surfing" and I find that interesting and

another small avenue to check out.

Two of Ichabod's brothers ARE buried in the Bromley Cemetery and I have most

of their lines current. We still don't have much on Nathaniel and nothing on

Peregrine, but we think we may have found Nathaniel in McKean co. Another

area to explore. We're related to just about everyone down there, laugh.

Best, kathie

In particular I am looking for the parents of Phineas GRAVES b. 1800 VT, who married Anna KENDALL in Truxton before 1828. Phineas had brothers named Amos and Jesse, and possibly also Lebbeus, Daniel and Orrin. Their father may have been Reuben GRAVES Jr. of Truxton.

QRYTEXT: One of the biggest problems I have faced in the search for my kinfolk seems to be they moved about so fast they were always one jump ahead of the census takers. About all they ever left behind were their daughters. For this reason, I am going to attempt a different ploy. One of my earliest relatives was Nathaniel GRUMMOND, bn: 5 June 1788. He settled in German, Cortland County, NY. He died there 3 April 1872. His wife was Lydia WENTWORTH, bn: December 28 1788 and died in German 25 April 1870. Up until now, all else I knew about them is they had one son, Ferdinand Grommon [sic] buried in the plot next to them. He died 15 Feb 1832, at the age of 22 years. These three people are buried behind the Church in Pitcher, Chanango County, NY, less then six miles from German, in Cortland County. I have since learned there were other children growing up at the home in German.

Emily Grummons, was born in German, abt 1817. She married Michael A. Mericle date unknown. What is known, he died 25 August 1872 at the young age of 54 years

Henry C, Mericle, bn 26 May 1849 died young

Lydia A. Mericle bn 26 June 1849

Milford D Mericle bn 30 Nov 1846 died 03 June 1860

William GRUMMONS was bn: 1819 in Otsego County before the family reached German, NY. On 20 June 1847, he wed Eliza Kenyon, age 25, daughter of Asa Kenyon at the Church at Pitcher. The ceremony performed by the Rev, Elijah Beebe.

William Milford Grummons, bn: 1849

Eliza Grummons, bn 1850

Adalpo ??? bn: 1854

Sally Grummonds [sic] was also born in German in 1819. She was to become the 2nd wife of Peter Smith, bn. 31 October 1814 and died 26 July 1884. Sally died 24 June1896. Peter and Sally are both buried behind the Baptist Church in Cincinnatus Cortland County, NY.

Allen Smith, bn 24 April 1849. Owned a farm in Brackel, and a store in

Cincinnatus.

William N. Smith, no other data.

Nathaniel Grummons, Jr., bn abt. 1827 in German first married Harriet Burrows, he was 23 years old, Harriet was 25 years old. Harriet died at the age of 29 years, in 1860, leaving behind one child, Fredrick W. Grummond, bn. in 1854 in Kittellville, Chanango County, NY. Soon after Fredrick's mother died he went to live with his grandparents in McDonough, NY. Four years later, Nathaniel Grummond remarried and moved to Binghamton, Broome County, NY.

Have you thought to try looking in Cortland or Chanango Counties for the

name. Goetcheus and found a great number of them either in Pitcher

Cemetery or Lisle Cemetery of Broome County. My g-g-ggranduncle David

Grummons of Lisle, NY married, Mary Goetcheus daughter of John D and

Amelia ( Ford) Goetcheus. Mary was born in 1841 and died in 1906. They

had one son, to my knowledge, a Holden Grummons. On 27 Feb. 1886,

Holden was placed on probation with the Yorkshire

(now known as Lisle) Methodist Church. The following month, 13 March

1887 his mother Mary was also placed on probation. The result of both

trials they were dropped from the church. At this time, I am attempting

to acquire a record of why they were placed on probation. I suspect for

alcohol use. If you think this may have been Goetcheus could be

Gutchess. It might be to our best interest to work this one out

together.

Kenneth G. Peak, b. 15 FEB 1910

I have written previously and cannot find any relatives. Kenneth was my

Father, the family spelled the name as PECK or PEEK. There were four

children,

Ronald b. 20 SEP 1908

Edna b. 31 DEC 1912

Elizabeth b. 15 SEP 1914

two step sisters,

Mary Peek b. 1921

Catherine Peek b. 1923

Any help in this area would be appreciated. I have quite a bit of success

but cannot find the girls anywhere or my Grandmother, Bessie Anna Lyke Peek

b. 04 AUG 1887.

Thank you,

Emma L. Peak Smith

QRYTEXT: Bill,

I was not very familiar with Grummons in central NY, but I am quite familiar with both Maricle (Mericle) and the Peter Smith families. I am the former president of the Cortland County Genealogical Society (I now live in Florida). Also, note that German is in Chenango not Cortland County.

There were four Michael's in the Maricle family (also spelled Mericle in some records). The one you refer to is, Michael Adam Maricle, b. 26 June 1817 son of Cornelius Mericle Sr. He died as you said age 54. He married Emily Grummons and had 9 children:

1. Harriet R., 1844-1914 m. A. Ruggles Cass of Taylor, NY

2. Helen E., 1845-1906 m. Elijah Crane of Taylor, NY

3. Milford D., 1847-1859

4. Lydia A., 1849-1921, m.1-Edwin S. Cass; 2-Thomas Weaver

5. Henry C., 1851-

6. Emma, 1855-1922, m. Frank W. Coates

7. Cecilia, 1858-1922, m. Elias E. Kenyon

8. Julia

9. George C., 1861-1945; m. Sarah J. Alexander

I have followed several of these family to the present day, mostly in the Cincinnatus, Cortland County, NY area.

****************

Peter Smith, b. 31 Oct. 1814, son of John P. & Betsey (Countryman) Smith; d. 26 July 1884; m.1-Amy Rickard (d. soon after m.); Sally Grummonds & had 4 children:

1. William M., m.1-Hester Baldwin; 2-Frances Andrews; 3-Hester Phillips; 4-Emma Davis.

2. Sarah Jane, m.1-Leland Robinson; 2-Joseph Silvernail

3. Allen, 1849-1921, m1-Julia Baldwin; 2-Esadena (Beckwith) Birdlebough.

4. Sally, m. Adam Tice.
