Special meeting of the Pommerscher Verein Freistadt / Pomeranian Society of Freistadt.
Trinity Lutheran Church, 10729 W. Freistadt Rd., Mequon, Wisconsin. The speaker will be Rudolf von Thadden. Rudolf lived on the family estate in Trieglaff, Kreis Greifenberg, during World War II. He has made the study of the history of the Illinois and Michigan Canal his special interest for a very long time. Not only has he prepared numerous papers and presentations on the subject, he has been instrumental in establishing the Illinois and Michigan Canal Archives at Lewis University, appropriately in the heart of the Corridor. This archive, constantly growing, contains not only many of the official publications connected with the canal, including reports, surveys, hearings, engineering and economic studies, but also extensive material on the life of the canal and its adjacent communities. In addition, the collection includes numerous works on similar canals in the Middle West and elsewhere to place the Illinois and Michigan Canal in a suitable context. The meeting starts at 7:30 pm. Experts from the Netherlands and the U.S. will work side-by-side with local historical groups and historians to present a picture of the vibrant Dutch-American culture which thrives in Wisconsin. These experts will include Dr. Robert Swierenga and Dr. Elton Bruins, research professors at the Van Raalte Institute, Hope College, Holland, Mich.; Dr. Hans Krabbendam, assistant director of the Roosevelt Study Center, Middleburg, Netherlands; Dr. James Schaap, English professor, Dordt College, Sioux Center, Iowa and Yvette Hoitink, project manager at the National Archives, The Hague, Netherlands. These researchers will be joined by others who will discuss Dutch immigration history, the various settlements throughout Wisconsin, differences and similarities between the Dutch Catholics and Dutch Protestants, the Dutch language as it exists in Wisconsin and Dutch-American authors discussing their influences and publications. Participants will be able to envision what it was like to live in the Netherlands prior to emigrating. They will understand the fear of a new world and a different language, but also the stories of strength and success as the new immigrants settled in Wisconsin and formed new communities. The third day will consist of a genealogy contact day, where organizations and individuals from around the state will showcase their resources and research. Genealogy workshops ranging from reading Dutch documents to internet resources available worldwide will be offered. Compiling your medical family tree might be easier than you think, even if you don’t have formal medical or genealogical training – anyone can do it! This class will show you how to compile an MFT chart and Predisposition Results Sheet, and will equip you with the tools to create your own. An MFT could be one of the most valuable gifts of information you ever give to yourself, your children, and other relatives.
