     The purpose of the German Interest Group (GIG) is to educate and support our members with their German genealogical research. The GIG sponsors monthly evening meetings with speakers and an annual workshop.

     Meetings are the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 2921 Mount Zion Avenue, Janesville.  There are no meetings in January, July, or September.  Yearly dues are $7.50/single or $10.00/family and include a quarterly newsletter.  You will find membership and registration information on a separate page.

Meeting Dates & Speaker Information

September - no meeting

 

October 6 - Gary Raetz, of Rockford, will present a program about his 2005 trip to Alzey in the Rhineland-Palatinate region of Germany.  Gary and his friend, Herb, stayed with Herb's relatives for four days and learned a lot about the daily life of the family of six, consisting of the parents of Arnt, Arnt and his wife, and their two children.  You will see the local festival on Saturday night, the outdoor church service on Sunday morning, followed by a "picnic," which included beer, on the timbered property of the parsonage.  You will learn about the cemeteries, local towns, pastures with sheep and cattle, and the winery business in the barn behind the house.  Arnt and his neighbors raise a lot of grapes for his wine business.

 

November 3 - Dee Grimsrud, the Reference Archivist at the Wisconsin Historical Society, will share her tips for searching ArCat and MadCat, Wisconsin Historical Society online catalogs, by using a home computer.
