to 1790 Census of Bennington County, Vermont
The names of the heads-of-households, as reported on this census, are found below. They are arranged, in alphabetical order, by surname. Following the names are a series of numbers which represent the entries reported in the respective columns for the household. The order of the columns (and numbers reported) are shown in the order in which they appear.
It appears the actual census pages for Bennington County, Vermont took the column for "All Other Free Persons" a laudable step beyond, and instead included separate columns to enumerate black residents by age and gender in the same manner as white residents. Instead of the commonly seen column for "All Other Free Persons," this county included 3 columns to report: black males over 16, black males under 16 and black females. The 1907-08 printed version of the census (published by Bureau of Census) does NOT show this distinction which was indeed made on the actual census pages. It only reports the total number of "All Other Free Persons." On this online version of the abstracted census page, the total number of "All Other Free Persons" is given, then it is followed by the number reported in the individual age and gender columns which appear on the actual census; the latter included within brackets: For example: 3 [1 black male over 16, 1 black male under 16, 1 black female].
Please note: Though a column for the number of "slaves" was included among the U. S. Census questions, some of the Vermont towns/townships apparently chose NOT to include a column for "slaves." When this column was not included on the census pages, the column order below will be "missing" this column as well. Also, for the towns which did not include this column, the names will be followed by 1 less number.
1. Free white males of 16 years upward, including heads of families
2. Free white males under 16 years of age
3. Free white females including heads of house
4. Total All other free persons [number of black males over 16, number of black males under 16, number of black females when reported in this manner]
5. Page number within parenthesis (p. ? )
Free white males under 16 years = 65 Free white females including heads of families = 137 All other free person = 1 [within the household of Edword RYON] Slaves = 0 Total = 272 48 households
