The Old Dominion Chapter is the oldest chapter in Virginia. We were organized in 1892 with Mrs. James H. Dooley, of Richmond, serving as the first regent. We are a diverse group of women ranging in ages from 20s to 90s. We share a common bond in that an ancestor(s) served as a patriot in the Revolutionary War. We desire to learn more about that time period including their customs.
We are also involved in community projects with students, veterans, and new citizens in the Richmond area. We take field trips to historical sites within about a 100-mile radius of Richmond. Our meetings are held the second Saturday of the month. Refreshments are at 1 pm. and the meeting begins at 1:30 pm. Our main project is the Annual Wreath Laying held in February at the Houdon Statue of George Washington in the Rotunda of the Virginia State Capitol. Good Citizen Awards are given to a student from each of the nine area high schools that we sponsor. During the awards ceremony, the colors are presented by Honor Guards from local high schools. Other activities occur during this ceremony. This ceremony is open to the public and is well attended.
