The VA-NC Piedmont Genealogical Society Search Room
is located on the second floor of the Danville Public Library,
511 Patton Street, downtown Danville, Virginia. Mailing address

The Public Library Historical and Genealogical section is
adjacent to the Search room and is open when the library is open.
MEETINGS The Society meets the 3rd Monday
of every month at 6:00 PM, except in July and December, in the
Auditorium, Danville Public Library. Parking is in the library
lot or on Patton and Court Streets. Visitors are welcome.
PURPOSE Organized in April 1978, this
non-profit educational society has as its purpose to preserve and
share local records with persons having interest in the Virginia
counties of Franklin, Henry, Pittsylvania, and Halifax and the
Virginia independent cities of Danville and Martinsville; and the
North Carolina counties of Rockingham, Caswell, and Person; and
other such Virginia and North Carolina information pertinent to
these counties and their inhabitants.
SOCIETY HOLDINGS: A collection of over
5000 books including family genealogies, maps, Civil War soldier
name index and units, local cemetery and funeral home records,
obituaries, Danville City Directories from as early as 1878,
exchange publications, microfilms, file drawers (44) of family
files. The computer collection contains many donated family files
and searchable disks from the World Family Tree.
DANVILLE PUBLIC LIBRARY HOLDINGS: This
collection exceeds 7,000 volumes including most standard
reference books on Virginia genealogy, sources io the Virginia
Historical Register (Swem), many Virginia counties, families, and
local history, DAR Lineage records, ships passenger records,
peerages, pension and census records.
MEMBERSHIP: Membership is open to all
individuals, families, libraries, and societies. Dues are $15.00
per calendar year. Members receive Piedmont Lineages which is
published quarterly. A membership application can be found on the
"Membership Application" page link above.
SURNAMES: Members may list on application
forms five surnames with pertinent data to be published in the
November "Piedmont Lineages" each year. They can also
submit surnames with pertinent data on 3 x 5 index cards, placing
their name and address on each card to be available to patrons in
the Family File index.
DONATIONS: Members may submit any other
materials they wish, especially pedigree charts and copies of
records for the Family Files in the Search Room. The Society
welcomes donations of any genealogical books, research materials
and family data on computer disks. Donors must realize that such
material will be available to patrons in the Search Room.
Donation recognition letters will be provided upon request.
QUERIES: Piedmont Lineages prints members'
queries at no cost. Non-members queries cost is $1.00 for the
first fifty (50) words and $2.00 over that number. Queries must
be brief. The Society staff reserves the right to edit as needed
and does not assume responsibility for opinions or errors in
queries submitted.
RESEARCH REQUESTS: Requests should be
presented in writing either by letter or by E-mail. They must be
specific as possible with names, locations, and dates. Simple
requests must include self addressed stamped envelopes. If
requests require copying of material, the requester is advised
the cost of copying and postage. Upon receipt of the remittance,
copies will be mailed to the specified home address. If requests
are more than we can expect of our volunteers, a list of local
professional genealogists is available.
