The Virginia Genealogist offers the 1800 Fauquier County, Virginia Tax List for your review: Volume 19 (pages 177-182) and Volume 20 (pages 250-257).

You may use TAX LISTS in conjunction with probate records to isolate your individual. For example, in Lincoln Co., Kentucky, there were several Hugh Logans on the tax list. By using land records, those holding land could be identified because the waterway the land existed on was also mentioned in the tax list. The younger adult males could be identified by owning only a mare - not yet having land. Widows could be identified because, at the death of a spouse, the wife may show on the next year's tax list as owning that land. Generally, after that the land appears as: "Hugh Logan, heirs of..." or in the name of a specific child or children. Lois Masters ljmasters@yahoo.com

Hi all, For any of you who have not taken the opportunity to review the Fauquier Co., VA Personal Property Tax List, I would like to tell you that you are missing a very important Genealogy Document. It is available on microfilm at the library in Warrenton, VA.

In general, there are 3 lists for each year from 1782-1850, but they are not always microfilmed in the same order. It is important to put the 3 lists in the same order for analysis purposes. One year by itself does not do much for you, but if you follow a person from year to year you will find important family information.

For instance, William Heflin Sr. was listed as the head of household and the person responsible for the tax. His sons William Jr. and Yearby were picked up when they reached titheable age (16-21) and then they are listed separately, but adjacent (same family, same household) when they reach 21 years of age. When William Sr. died in 1803, his wife Margaret Nancy Haddox was listed as the hear of household adjacently to her son William Heflin Jr.

By noting the enumerator, when added to the lists in 1788, you will be sure you have the right William etc and an idea of where in Fauquier Co. they lived. For example, the above Heflin Family were of what I call the German Heflins and resided between Palmer's Crossroads and Olean VA (a six mile stretch). For anyone interested in the Heflin Surname and all variations thereof, I have extracted the Heflin information from the Fauquier Co. Personal Property Tax List 1782-1850 and have performed an analysis which I included in the 50 page document. Regards, Phyllis Scott
