St. Stephen's Episcopal Church Cemetery

After years of work on the part of Priscilla Harper, whose ancestors and relatives are buried there, Fairview Cemetery last year earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. Finally the Town of Culpeper woke up and realized what a treasure they have there, and in 2003 they had 96 stones repaired at a cost of between $200. and $550., depending on the amount of damage.

This year the Town is set to repair 37 grave markers, at a cost of about $17,000.00.  The Town is to be commended for its efforts; however, the more financial help they have, the more gravestones they will be able to repair.  They are seeking financial contributions for repairs from immediate family members or descendants.  If you find a relative or ancestor here you are urged to contact Donna Foster,  Culpeper Town Clerk (540-829-8240).

These are the stones that are slated for repair:

John Aloysius Bailey                             Kate Burke
James Bush                                           Eliza Lewis Bywaters

Town officials expect to start similar restoration work in the African-American burial sections, known as Antioch and Fisherman's sections. "These areas were segregated from the 'white section' for about 70 years -- from 1899 to 1970," wrote Ms. Brophy-Champion.  Allison Brophy-Champion has been doing a great job at covering developments about the cemetery for the Culpeper Star Exponent.  Those of you with computers should go to
http://www.starexponent.com and read some of her articles.  She has just completed a three-part series on the Blucher Hansbrough family entitled "Half Brother, Fully Enslaved."  It's an excellent read.
*************************

Speaking of newspapers,  two of the Culpeper newspapers, the Star-Exponent  [daily] and the Culpeper News [weekly] have been covering pretty much the same material with the same outlook since they were bought out by a syndicate based in Florida. So they merged, and the only independent newspaper in town is the  free Culpeper Citizen which comes out weekly on Thursday.

Recently the Travel Channel came to Culpeper to do a story on the furniture maker Merillat, which operates a plant here.  We have no idea when it will air this fall.

We have finally finished the Chancery files project and submitted our invoice!!!.  The files have been returned to the Clerk, who will hold them awaiting the LVA's instructions re: what to do next.

Anyone coming to Culpeper who hasn't been here for awhile will not recognize the town!  There are more new subdivisions than I can count, both in the town and county, and a multitude of big-box stores and eateries are under construction.  Traffic is an absolute mess.
