Osage County is situated about midway across the State, north and south,
and about fifty miles from its eastern boundary. In extent it is twenty-four miles
east and west, and thirty miles north and south. It is bounded on the north by
Shawnee County, on the east by Douglas and Franklin, on the south by Coffey,
and on the west by Lyon and Wabaunsee.
1.
Organized as Weller county in 1855; name changed to Osage in 1859.
Originally named for John B. Weller, of Ohio, member of Congress and
Governor of that state; also Governor of California, and Senator, Minister
to Mexico, etc. The name Osage comes from the Osage river, the headwaters
of which stream drain almost the entire county. Lyndon is the county seat.2.
