The Cemetery Series
Each book in the cemetery series is fully indexed to every name appearing
on the tombstones. The series will eventually include every known cemetery
in Centre County, Pennsylvania -- over 150 cemeteries. The entries
within a book are arranged by cemetery and then within the
cemetery in the order in which the graves are found in the rows.
Where there are multiple names on one stone, this is indicated. The grave order
and the stone arrangement allows the researcher to infer relationships.
There are also directions to locate each cemetery, brief histories
(as available) for the cemeteries, and maps of each cemetery.
The compilation of one of these books is a long process.
A volunteer visits the cemetery in person to walk down each row, taking down the data from
each stone. Then, the data is computerized and printed out. The print-out
is compared to any known records of the cemetery or inventories compiled
in past years. Discrepancies are noted, and then the pages are taken
back to the cemetery for proofreading. Where there are discrepancies,
a decision is made as to which is more accurate. If such a decision cannot
be made, both versions will appear in the book.
