It is a beautiful site and worth a visit just to check it out.
We added 4 sections today....more to follow. Since Debbie is not from

August 25, 2000 I changed the whole look of the site today! I guess to promote the maturity of the site as we will soon reach 10,000 hits and our 1st year anniversary of hosting the site. I found the lost page of the Sanford Cemetery and will post it soon. I am thinking of moving all of the Olde Tyme photos to a Zing.com album for ease of viewing and posting.
August 18, 2000 Thanks to Donna Gigliotti for sending us the 2nd part of the 1880 Shippen Township Census! We really appreciate it! She also sent along an expanded listing of the Castle Garden Cemetery! Dianne DeShong has contributed the Stimpson Cemetery from Clinton County because there are some Cameron County people buried there....thanks Donna!!
August 14, 2000 Thanks to Dianne DeShong and Glenda Card, we now have the Whiting Cemetery online! The cemetery is in Sterling Run in Lumber Township. Thanks ladies!!!
August 13, 2000 I added the Sanford Cemetery...I think I am missing a page of names...I will check it out. Added Don Hefright's offer to do look ups in his collection of 2000+ obituaries! Also updated the Query page with index for July provided by Walt.
August 8, 2000 Special thanks to Donna Gigliotti and her sister Shirley A.Vicere for recording the Winslow Cemetery in Benzinger TWP., Elk County. We have added this cemetery because of all the Cameron County folks buried there. I will be adding the Sanford Cemetery later today.
August 1, 2000 Walt Dean has added a huge collection of Obits...check them out! Bob Bloom has added a Zing.com album with some awesome family photos for these families- Ellis, Zimmer, Bloom, Kenworthy, Klees, Loucks, Ness, and McDonald. Dee Shaffer-Zito went right to town and added a ton of deeds. Add yours if you have any!
July 30, 2000 At Dee Shaffer-Zito's request, I added the link to the Cameron County Deeds site at Rootsweb. She has some deeds she wants to share. Feel free to add any you may have. I have also added a link to the Enchanted Mountains Genealogical Society...they have some great stuff there and some of it may apply to you if you had ancestors from McKean or Potter County before those parts became Cameron County.
July 29, 2000 We have been having problems with the site search engine, so I replaced it....let me know how it works. Added two new links. One to a new Central PA website with a ton of photos and the other to the Cornell University online Library called Making Of America. They have scanned and indexed hundreds of books and periodicals from 1811 and 1926. Searches bring up the actual pages from the source. It is an awesome site. Search surnames, counties and towns.
July 24, 2000 Lots of new stuff! I just got back a week ago from a week long visit in Emporium. I only got a fraction of what I wanted to get done accomplished. Armed with a digital camera on loan from my sister, I traipsed all over the county taking pictures. Unfortunately I did not get any of down county. I never made it past Sterling Run. Next year. You can access the 50 photos from the front page. I donated a copy of the old photo of the Mountaineer Hose Company to the Emporium Fire Department through Mr. Max Narby. They were happy to get it. It will also be posted in the Echo at some later date. Lot's of people I talked to have heard of us. I left brochures about the site at various shops and at the Little Museum. GO TO THE LITTLE MUSEUM!!!!!!!! They have tons of old pics of our ancestors, many of them identified. Do what you have to to get there. I only got to spend a couple of hours there, could have spent all day! Saw a photo of my 4th Great Grandmother Jordan! Frank Gillespie, President of the Historical Society, was a great host and tour guide. I also spent several hours in the Courthouse. The folks there were very nice, but had little knowledge of what was there. There is a lot there too! I only checked out some deeds and marriage records (there is a ton of info in the marriage applications!) Divorce records are in a book labeled "Drunks and Lunatics!" I am not joking!! I also spent some time in the McKean County Courthouse. They have the Tax records from 1858-1860 for Shippen Township and possibly the Emporium Borough. The records include the amount of land, horses and cows each family owned. I have fixed the links for the 1870 Census...no one told me they are not working. Donna Gigliotti has started uploading the rest of the 1880 Census...the first part of the Shippen Township is linked. Please take the time to thank her and Mary Ellen for spending the hours to do this!!! It takes literally hundreds of hours. More to come. Mr. Narby gave me a copy of the list they use in decorating the graves of the County's Veterans....there will be a few of the unmarked graves from each cemetery identified. I also read the Sanford Cemetery in West Creek near Truman. Over half of the graves there are unmarked! Stones and wooden crosses mark a majority of the graves! Check for some new old photos...I have a bunch saved up....including the first aero plane built in Emporium in 1911!!
June 4, 2000 Dee Shaffer Zito has graciously invited us to link to her site that contains the Cameron County Will Index for Register A. She has transcribed the index covering entries from 1860-1930. The index give the Will Book number, and page. It also gives the name of the Executor. I would think that with this information you could order a copy of the will from the Cameron County Courthouse, whose address in on the County Resources page. Thanks Dee for this great contribution. I am sure many people will benefit from it. I have added some new photos including an 1869 photo of Emporium and a 1907 postcard of Driftwood.
May 24, 2000 Many thanks once again to Mary Ellen Smith! Parts of the 1880 Census are now posted on the site! The Emporium and Driftwood boroughs and Portage Township. Thanks Mary Ellen for all of your tedious work. If you folks have not seen an actual census, you have no idea how hard it is to decipher and translate the information. The links to the Surname Index in the Query section have been fixed. Please let me know if you find any broken links. Thanks!
May 20, 2000 Added several new rare photos. One of the Emporium Fire Dept. all decked out for a parade from about 1912! A 1907 post card of the "new" State Road. A rare photo of an 1850 McKean County $1. An engraving of Emporium from 1876...check out the covered bridge! In the Cameron County section you will find a great map of PA from 1836 with the Cameron County section enlarged on the page.
May 8, 2000 April was a busy month for me and I have not done much to the site. I have been collecting reams of data though, copying all kinds of records, books and articles. Hope to start posting them soon. I now have all of the cemetery listings for the entire county including St. Marks. I will do look-ups if you need until we get them posted. They are only current up to 1967. I have added some new pictures. Mary Ellen Smith has several townships of the 1880 Census completed and we hope to get them posted soon. I also now have a copy of Beer's 1890 History of the Counties McKean, Elk Cameron and Potter. I only copied the Cameron County section and will be posting it on the site as time permits. I will be posting the biographies in the Biography section of the site so that more people have access to them. I am planning on being in Emporium for a week in July and hope to run into some of you then.
April 2, 2000 I have added 11 new photos including shots of the Cameron Iron Works, Cameron Brick Works, 1906 St. Marks Church with steeple, and many more.
March 28, 2000 Thanks to Dee Shaffer-Zito, we now have the Sizerville Cemetery listed! Thanks Dee! I hope to have more additions later in the week.
March 16, 2000
David Harford who writes the "Stuff.Com" articles in the Echo
graciously mentioned our site in his weekly column that appeared in yesterday's
paper! Thanks for the exposure David! I sent off 2 letters to the
Cameron County school librarians and introduced our site to them. I hope
they will let the students and teachers know about us. I would like to know that
we got some kids interested in their Heritage! I also got the Heritage
Quest CD of the 1900 Cameron County Census. I was a bit disappointed in the
quality, although it may be more the condition of the census than their CD. Many
pages of the CD are not readable...they are too dark, torn, or the writing too
sloppy to read. Someone wrote numbers over the names on many sections of
it making it hard to read. The concept of having the census on CD is
great! It is worth $20 to have it at home! You can zoom in on a name, but it
breaks up too quick and becomes a blob of squares. I will do look ups with
certain conditions spelled out in the Census section of the site. I had
problems with the graphics on the front page...I hope they are fixed...it is
hard to tell because they show up on my computer because all of the graphics are
there. PLEASE let me know if you have any problems with any links or graphics so
I can get them fixed!
March 15, 2000 We moved! Our new address is http://www.rootsweb.com/~pacamero . Please make sure you change your bookmarks! This move will allow us to grow at a faster rate as I will be able to upload pages as I go. Many thanks to Nate of PA-ROOTS who has been a great friend and help in our fast growth. He has been very patient while I have learned my way around the Web. Dee Zito has sent us two cemetery readings- Morrison and Glover, both in Shippen Township. Thanks Dee! Dee and I went to school together, so it has been fun working with her! I have added the much waited Roster of Company G of the 84th Pennsylvania Infantry. David Richards is currently writing a book about this regiment and is looking for bios and photos of the men from Cameron County. His contact information is with the Roster. If you find any broken links, PLEASE let me know! More to come!
March 11, 2000 Mary Ellen has posted the 1870 Gibson Township Census and it is linked. we now have the complete census for 1870! Thank you so much for all of your work Mary Ellen!!! It is greatly appreciated. I have posted 6 or 7 new photos. Run, don't walk, to your nearest LDS Family History Center!! They have over 20 rolls of microfilm packed full of Cameron County Records! Check the Bibliography for details! If you have not posted your surnames on the Rootsweb Query section, you are missing out on the most valuable research tool available on the internet! February 27, 2000 Mary Ellen has posted the 1870 Shippen Township Census and it is linked. Added 2 books about Tom Mix and another about hunting and trapping in the 1860's. We are getting about 100 hits every 2 days or so. Folks in Cameron County are hearing about us and are visiting the site. Also posted are a seven new photos...check out the one of Emporium with out the Court House! It must be pre 1896! I am thinking about adding a Family Photo page and a Cameron County Today page...any thoughts?
February 19, 2000 Added four new photos to the Olde Tyme photo page. Added links for US Census microfilm and CD's for Cameron County on the new Bibliography page. Also added information on Cemetery Records on microfilm from the LDS. I am working on adding the 84th Pennsylvania Regiment Roster and history. Someone has volunteered to transcribe the 100 Years Ago articles from the Echo. I have written them for permission to post them on the site. A writer for the Echo who does a regular article called Stuff.com has offered to do a write up on our site in his column. I have also emailed the Editor to see if he would print an article about the site. Either way, we should be in the the Echo soon. I have linked our site with a bunch more sites and search engines and emailed about 50 people who use the local provider penn.com. With over 100 new hits the past 2 days, they must have checked us out!
February 12, 2000 Added a new bibliography that contains the titles of every book ever written about Cameron County...well every one I could find anyway! :) Let me know of anymore. Also included are the newspapers from Cameron County.
February 5, 2000 Spring is in the air...oh sorry! Added 2 new Cameron County links, one with some pics of the 1942 flood and other old pics, and a link to the 1850 Grove Township census that is posted on the Clinton County site. More to come!
February 2, 2000 Thanks to Mary Ellen Smith, we now have access to the 1870 Emporium Borough AND the Lumber township census online! Please join me in thanking her! It takes a lot of hours to do this and I know it is a labor of love for her, but a few thank you's sure help!
February 1, 2000 I had a nasty bout with the flu a week ago. I hope y'all are able to avoid it! It is way too cold in Georgia this winter!! I have uploaded 5 new photos and updated the Links section. Please let me know of any and all Cameron County related sites...lets get them all on here! The link to the Lord-Richey Farm has been fixed. Please let me know of any links that do not work. Mary Ellen Smith has uploaded the 1870 Lumber Township Census, but it does not seem to be posted yet. I will let you know when it is. She has also updated the Newton Cemetery listings...I will have them posted soon. Word is getting out about our site....traffic is increasing. Be sure to check the guest book, queries and Obituaries often for additions. I am disappointed that our Mailing List is so quiet! We are missing out on a great tool by not using it more. I hope to have an article to the Echo this month which will help increase traffic. I am not getting much response from the people who are living in Cameron County, so I hope the article will help. There is a TON of information there that I hope to be able to share with you some day! Still looking for ideas for the site...what would you like to see here?
January 2, 2000 Hope you all had a wonderful Holiday with your families and a safe and Happy New Year celebration. It seems that most of the Y2K scare was all hype. Hope you did not fall for it and spend tons of money on survival stuff! I had a great trip to Emporium and a great time with my family. It was too cold to do the cemetery readings that I wanted to do, although I did drag my poor Dad all around the county looking at them! I have added the Lord-Richey Farm Cemetery as it was pretty small and I will be posting some names from the Driftwood cemetery that I read while I was there. I also posted some more information about the BUCKTAILS. I have registered our site with 40+ Search Engines and have contacted a slew of Emporium folks online to let them know about our site in hopes of bringing more researchers to our pages. I am planning on a letter to the Echo to let the County know about us. The more traffic we get, the more chances you will find cousins and fellow researchers. I have also added 16 old Cameron County photos to the photo pages. The links to the Mix Run Cemetery and the 1850 Lumber Township Cemetery have been fixed. Please let me know if you have any problems with any links.
December 5, 1999 Added the Mix Run Cemetery submitted by Walt Dean. Thanks Walt!
December 2, 1999 -Wow is it December already?? Many of us will owe Mary Ellen Smith a debt of gratitude for typing the entire Newton Cemetery list!! It is up to date as of October 1999. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!! I have not counted the names, but there are 88 pages in all! Please drop her a note and say thanks!
November 30, 1999- I have some great additions today. Many thanks to Walt Dean for the Miller Run Cemetery list and the lead to the LDS microfilm of Cameron County Cemeteries! I am off to the LDS to see what else they have on Cameron County! Dianne DeShong has graciously submitted the 1850 Lumber Township Census! Thank you so much! Lumber was part of Clinton County in 1850. I have also added links to the McKean County site where you will find the 1820, 1830 and 1840 Census records for Shippen and Keating Township. I do not know how much of Keating became part of Cameron County, but I found several familiar names in these records. I have also added the Civil War Roster for Company C of the 42nd PA Volunteer Infantry, better known as the BUCKTAILS! This company was recruited from Cameron County and has many familiar names. There is more to come. If I could type worth a darn, I'd be dangerous! :) I really appreciate those of you who are sending all this information...it is a great service to the people researching their families in Cameron County! May the Genealogy Angel point you to the location of your brick wall!!
November 28, 1999- Hope you all had a great
Thanksgiving! Now the Holiday rush is upon us!! All of the cemetery links have
been fixed. Dee Shaffer Zito has submitted the Rich Valley Cemetery! Thanks
Dee!! We are moving right along on these cemeteries! Hope to read a couple
myself when I am home for Christmas.
November 19, 1999-Hi Folks! I am behind on updates this week. I have been spending nights after work reading the old Emporium Independents. I have been able to send useful info to several folks. I have learned a lot about the County while reading. I have some great info that will soon be online, including an extensive history of Cameron County Schools from 1807 to 1877! Lots of names and stories! I also have a rather complete history of all of the gun Powder Plants in the County. Cameron County supplied tons of powder for W. W. I. Found other interesting stories, like the flag pole that used to be in front of the East Fourth Street High School in 1925 was donated by the Ku Klux Klan!! I will be posting this story and others soon. In the mean time...check out the following cemetery listings- Pine Street, Sterling Run posted by Diane DeShong; Grove Hill, Moore Hill and Markert Cemeteries, posted by Donna Gigliotti. Your work is greatly appreciated!! Check out the Obituary listing....there are over 30 there now....add the ones you have! The Search Engine works GREAT!! Please remember that it does not search any of the RootsWeb links....Obituaries, Wills or Biographies...you have to check out those individual sites.
November 11, 1999- I hope you get some use out of two new features. First is a search engine that will search this site for surnames, towns, cemeteries or what ever you want to search for. I have not tested it live yet to see what it does...so we shall see! The second feature is the tool above called Mind It. It will notify you by e-mail when ever this page changes so you can keep up with the latest additions. The MapQuest link that I added yesterday kicks in on York county...not sure why, the URL is correct. If you click on "return to the previous page", it will take you to the Cameron County page and you can then click on 'Search for town maps' and you get the Cameron County towns....I am working on correcting this. The Guestbook has been repaired...now we can look forward to hearing from you!
November 10, 1999- I have added some new links to RootsWeb Biographies and Wills for Cameron County at the suggestion of Dee Shaffer Zito. Once again, posting on these RootsWeb sites will give more people access to your family information and will help locate fellow searchers. I have also added a link to MapQuest -maps for most of the towns in Cameron County. What is neat about these maps is that they show many of the Runs (small valleys where people lived and worked by the water) in the County. There are also street maps for most towns. I have added new links under Related Sites that include a link about the Elk Herd...if you travel to Cameron County ask where you can go to see these majestic creatures! They are awesome and usually you can find them along the road! I also linked to Heritage Books, only because they still publish the Histories of the Counties, McKean, Elk, Cameron and Potter, Pennsylvania by J. H. Beers & Co., 1890...it is pricey, but available. I think you might be able to find an original copy for less than that! (The Cameron County Library has a copy) I also added a link to some free, printable genealogy forms to help keep you organized! Now which pile of papers did I put those forms???? What links would you like to share? Donna Gigliotti has added many names to the Huntley Cemetery list (it may now be complete?) and partial listings for Moorehill Cemetery. Thanks Donna! More to come!
November 4, 1999- Boy are you in for a treat! Hats off and many hearty thanks to Mary Ellen Smith and Donna Gigliotti! Mary Ellen has upload parts of the Cameron County Census for 1870 and is working on completing it! What a treat to have this information online! Thanks Mary Ellen!! Donna has sent us a transcript of the Mason Hill Cemetery! She says it is partial, but there are quite a few names and dates! Information such as this is priceless to those of us who no longer (or never did) live in Cameron County. Your hard work is greatly appreciated!
November 3, 1999- I just got 6 rolls of microfilm from the PA State Library containing the Emporium Independent, the Cameron County Press and The Voice of Emporium. What a thrill to relive the local history! These microfilms are available on loan through your local library. I will be posting some of my finds in the near future. I am hoping to be able to post the 4 pages of Cameron County History from the 1916 Anniversary Issue of the Independent....will depend on whether it copies ok or not. One of the neatest things about reading the paper is the local gossip from all the areas of the County! There are lots of little treasures in these columns!
The link has been fixed for the 1814 Gibson Township Tax Records and the 1905 photo of the Mason Hill School.
I have combined all of the Cemetery listings from the Township pages to the main Cemetery page...most people never found them on the Township sites. If you know of any cemeteries that are missing from the list, please let me know. I am especially interested in documenting the family cemeteries around the county.
Thanks to Mary Ellen Smith, we now have the Spring Street Cemetery online! This a very early cemetery and it contains the graves of some of the County's early settlers. What a great contribution! Thanks Mary Ellen!
We have had almost 400 hits in the past 2 weeks and NO ONE signed the Guest Book and only one person left a Query! Come on, humor me and take a moment to say "HI!" to all of your fellow researchers! If you are serious about finding information, networking with everyone who is researching Cameron County is how you get leads for your family lines! I have gotten about 75-80% of my family data from participating on Mailing Lists and leaving Queries everywhere. When you do leave Queries....give dates and full names and any other information that you already have. This gives others something to go on and may ring a bell with someone who has seen the names before. You will find that folks are very helpful if you give them enough information! Happy Hunting!
October 29, 1999- Well folks, we're off! It has been a couple of weeks since I have taken over the site and I am getting comfortable with making changes and working with Nate to get them uploaded. I am excited with the increased traffic already. I appreciate hearing from those who have contacted me. All ideas are welcome! I will be taking steps to let folks in Cameron County know that the site is active and hope to bring you new resources and information.
I ALREADY MET A NEW COUSIN!! In the few days I have been involved with this project I have already found a new 3rd Cousin-Donna Gigliotti. We are related through our JORDAN line. Donna has a wealth of information that will soon be posted mostly dealing with the surnames HICKS, JOHNSON, JORDAN, FARLEY and others. Many family photos too!
We may soon have the transcription of the NEWTON Cemetery!! Never in my wildest dreams had I ever expected that anyone was tackling that project. Not sure when it will be completed, but it will be here as soon as we can get it!
The main changes so far are:
Links to maps of Cameron County, especially the early 1800's maps that will help you figure out which county your early ancestors were in. Three more links to other maps will be posted in the next couple of days. All of the joining Counties are linked on the Cameron County page. I hope to expand the history section soon.
Links to the Sterling Run Cemetery transcription. Does anyone know of any other cemeteries that are already transcribed? We also want to know of any Family Cemeteries that are not listed. The Huntley Cemetery was previously listed as the Sterling Run Cemetery. It has been changed and I added my GORE ancestors that are buried there.
Civil War Page- The Civil War is one of my favorite pass times. I have numerous relatives who fought for both the North and the South. I hope to eventually have the rosters of all the Companies that were raised out of Cameron County. Any leads to Cameron County Units will be greatly appreciated. I have access to Bates Pennsylvania Regiments, so I can get the rosters if I know the Regiments.
Lookups- Pam Patton has accepted my request to to lookups in the History of the Counties, McKean, Elk, Cameron and Potter, Pennsylvania J.H. Beers & Co., 1890. This is a great source for early Families. Thanks Pam!
Photos- A new aerial view of Driftwood from about 1910 is posted. I soon hope to have my entire collection of Emporium and Cameron County pics posted. What photos do you have to share?
Obituaries- I have linked to the existing RootsWeb Cameron County Obituary section. Posting your obits here will give anyone searching RootsWeb access to them.
Mailing List- I have revived the Cameron County Mailing list...if you want to keep up with what is happening here as it happens and meet others who are researching Cameron County....subscribe to the list!
Well that's the start! Hope you find something useful! Share your successes with us!
Coming Soon- a bibliography of known books about Cameron County. HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!
