Caroline BUELL was the
daughter of Bemslee BUELL and
Lois SHERWOOD. Caroline born
approximately 1818 in Ontario - probably Brockville. Caroline
applied and received land as a daughter of a United Empire
Loyalist by Order-in-Council 26 May 1843, Drummond Township,
Lanark Co., Ont. Caroline married James ENNIS
Sr. (of Drummond Twp., Lanark Co.) on 5 June 1850. They were
married by Rev. SMART.
Caroline BUELL was the second
wife of James ENNIS Sr.,
(Ellen BAKER was his first
wife). Caroline and James ENNIS
Sr. had the following children:
Margaret ENNIS born 8 July
1851, Drummond Twp., Lanark Co., Ont. married 18 Jan 1869 William
CODE
Margaret died 1926, Mossbank, Saskatchewan (had eleven
children)
William ENNIS born about
1853, Drummond Twp., Lanark Co., Ont.
Thomas ENNIS born about 1855,
Drummond Twp., Lanark Co., Ont.
James ENNIS Sr. was an early
1820 settler of Drummond Twp., Lanark Co., Ontario - his family
originated in Killashandra Parish, Cavan County, Ireland. James ENNIS Sr. would work his land in
Drummond Twp. from spring to fall, and return to Ireland for the
winter months. He did this for several years before bringing his
family to Canada. James' brother Arthur and David followed him to
Canada in later years as well as a Cousin Arthur ENNIS.
In Carol Bennett's publication (1982) "In Search of
Lanark" the following appears:
The first mill was a gristmill, built circa 1825 by James
ENNIS. He was an energetic
man who went on to build a saw mill and the Ennisville Hotel. The
name of the village was changed to Ennisville in honor of his
family, and it was not until some years later that the present
spelling, Innisville, was adopted.
The family name was spelt ENNIS
but pronounced Innis.
In the County Atlas of 1880 the following appears:
Innisville contains two stores, a church, a hotel, two
woollen mills, a grist mill, a shingle mill and a foundry.
James ENNIS, after whom the
village was later named, built the first mill - a grist mill -
apparently about 1825. He later built an oat mill and saw mill
and ran the Ennisville Hotel. Woollen mills were later built here
by Abram and George CODE, and
James ENNIS and James JACKSON.
James ENNIS Sr. died 19
August 1864, Drummond Twp., and is buried in St. John's Anglican
Cemetery, Innisville, Ont.
Caroline (BUELL ) ENNIS died 26 June 1890 in Hampden,
North Dakota, U.S.A.
