Cleveland District Round Table

Members and Activities


The Cleveland District Round Table is a discussion group of the leadership of the genealogical societies in the five-county district which includes Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, and Medina. It meets twice a year, May and October to exchange information on the happenings within their organizations. Some of the groups represented at these meetings, in addition to the Ohio Genealogical Society chapters, include religious, nationality, ethnic, locality, and computer interest groups. Monday 4 August 2008 7:30 pm - "A Farm in the Firelands of Ohio: Memories of the Post-Civil War Period" will be presented by Anne Southworth McFarland, lawyer, librarian, and author. She is the editor of the book mentioned above which is a collection of correspondence of her great uncle Dayton A. Williams. Join East Cuyahoga County Genealogical Society at this regular meeting.

Wednesday 6 August 2008 7:30 pm "Historic Jewish Clevelanders" by Dr. Sean Martin of the Western Reserve Historical Society will be the program of Jewish Genealogy Society of Cleveland . His talk will focus on some of the prominent Jewish Clevelanders of the early 20th century.

Monday 11 August 2008 - 7:00 pm - " Passenger Lists and Naturalization" presented by Sandy Malitz, genealogy specialist at the Chardon Public Library. Sandy will explain how to research these popular sources at the regular meeting of the Lorain County Chapter OGS.

Wednesday 13 August 2008 am to 8:00 pm Geauga County Recorder's Office extended Summer hours for genealogy and home research.

Saturday 16 August 2008 9:00 am - 3:30 pm 23rd Ohio Genealogical Society Annual Chapter Management Seminar will be held at Holiday Inn of Elyria in Lorain County. This 9-session training day for OGS Chapter officers and chairs is open to others as well. See flyer for more information.

Tuesday 19 August 2008 8:30 am to 7:30 pm Cuyahoga Valley Genealogical Society will host a research trip to Ohio Genealogical Society in Mansfield, leaving the Independence Civic Center, 6363 Selig Drive. Brown bag for lunch is suggested. Evening meal at Dutch Heritage Restaurant in Bellville, Ohio is $15 and must be paid at the time of registration. Monday 8 September 2008 - 7:00 pm - "Genetic Genealogy: Using DNA to Find Your Ancestors" - Dr. James Freed, retired professor of zoology at Ohio Wesleyan University, past president of Delaware County Chapter/OGS presents his program which will emphasize paternal (Y Chromosome) DNA studies and maternal (Mitochondrial) DNA studies and starting ones own surname DNA study at the regular meeting of the Lorain County Chapter OGS.

Tuesday 9 September 2008 7:00 pm Geauga County Genealogical Society meets. Speakers will be John Sabol and Raymond Tindira on "What We Did On Our Summer Vacation" about their trip to Slovakia.

Friday 12 September 2008 5:30-10:30 pm Night Owl Prowl at Morley Library will be hosted by the Library and Lake County Genealogical Society. Topic will be "US Research-by State." Friday & Saturday, 12 & 13 September 2008 - Fall Genealogy Conference sponsored by the African-American Genealogical Society, Cleveland. Held at the Cleveland Public Library, Main Branch, Downtown. Will feature nationally known presenters such as J. Mark Lowe (researcher for PBS series "African-American Lives 2"), Tim Pinnick, and Jana Sloan Broglin. Will also include workshops and research time at the Cleveland Public Library. Monday 1 December 2008 7:00 pm - Holiday Celebration with special guest Ecky Broad and her presentation entitled "The Way We Were." Ecky Broad is a dramatist, story teller, and writer. She has performed at the Chautauqua Institute, and for many schools, theaters, and community organizations. She gives 150 shows a year from a repertory of 100 characters and 55 shows. Note time change for this meeting of the East Cuyahoga County Genealogical Society.
