The first pioneer teachers in America were sometimes
the pastor or class-leaders of a pioneer church. Once an area was more settled the
young single women of the community were often teachers. This is sometimes the only mention of
a grown single female's full name before their marriage.
The end result of the database will allow researchers to track
traveling teachers from county to county, and state to state; or identify young women by their
maiden names. Bountiful sources exist
in the county and township histories at our local libraries. Please help build this
database. Thank you.
