HOLY CROSS CHURCH

In 1912 the Italian population began to extend their homes along the waterfront
in the direction of the flowing Niagara River. So fast did their
numbers grow that Bishop Colton appointed the Rev. Joseph Gambino to form
a new parish. He said the first Mass for his new flock in the St.
James' Mission, 250 Front Avenue, October 11, 1914.
The corner-stone of the new church was laid April 28, 1915, and Monsignor
Baker dedicated it September 5, 1915. A large lot corner Maryland
and Niagara Streets was purchased February 1, 1921, and the large brick
building is used for a club, but eventually will be transformed into a
parochial school. Father Gambino was rewarded for his good work,
and was invested by Bishop Turner with the insignia of Domestic Prelate,
October 12, 1924.
