I was born just west of Chicago, Illinois in 1957. Half Norwegian (father),
half French Canadian. My Norwegian family settled in northern Illinois,
LaSalle county and Cook county (Chicago) in the mid to late 1800's. My
Askevold name came from the Øvre Askvoll farm in Askvoll,
Sogn og Fjordane, my grandmother was from Vetla Rokne, Voss, Hordaland.
Research has taken me to many farms and other areas of Norway and this
is an ongoing project with no end in sight. I joined the Air
Force right out of High School and in 1981 moved to the Ozark Mountains
in southwest Missouri where I worked in construction for 20 years.
I graduated from employee to employer in 2002 and I am now a masonry contractor,
my trade of 20 years. Photography is my oldest hobby, one of
almost 40 years. I now use digital camera's, scanner's and the computer
instead of a darkroom. I have been a member of the Pix and
Scan club for quite a few years.
We are a group that has formed off the main Norway list to exchange pictures. We help each other in learning to use our scanners, sizing, color, etc. Or, we just like to get pictures and have no scanner at all. We share a lot of Norwegian ancestors and landscape photos, but also our families, flowers, pets or anything else we enjoy. Drop Lou a note if you'd like to try it. He will add your name to the Pix and Scan Club address list. At present the Pix and Scan Club has 100 members. If you would like to join in just click the animated icon.
This group is for those who are interested in scanners and pictures.
Owning a scanner is not required, but you may want to get one later. You
do not have to be a member of the Norway
List, but there is a lot to learn there.

You cannot send picture attachments, or joke lists, to the Norway List.
If you have a scanner, please share all types of pix with us. (If you
need help in scanning, see below or mail me.) Family, pets, scenics,
and especially anything Norwegian is appreciated. If you do not, enjoy
ours, or you can find nice pix on the web. Just right-click them and save
them to a
folder you create. I made one called "My Pix" on my C:\ drive.
Then you can attach them to an email to the group. If you need help doing
this, send me an email.

Jokes and joke lists are allowed on the Pix & Scan Club. Please
send them to me for screening, and I will forward them to the group as
coming from you!!!

Service Messages have everyone's address in the To: line, they will
not have pix included. This allows us to pick up changes in the membership,
provide a list of members and send news.
Save the latest one in a folder, they are dated. You can use
"Reply to All" to post. Be sure to take out unneeded text and change
the subject line. If your address book allows group addresses, as
mine does, use that for convenience.
If you would like to visit Svein Ulvund's "Voss Now" site, and see many
Norway pix, go to:
http://home.sol.no/~svulvund/Voss_Now/
It's a treat.
You must pre-scan and then use your mouse to put a "box"
around the pix edges. Unless your scanner does that
automatically. You can crop it at this time if needed. Do
the final scan. Go to rescale, resize or transform, and see
how it came out, sizewise. DO NOT set up the resolution to
make the pix "better". It just makes it get bigger when
sent. Best to stay with what the scan came out at. I use
150 DPI (my default) all the time and it looks fine.
If the original is 4x5, you will need to make it smaller,
try approx. 3x4 or less. Change one number, and the other
will stay in proportion when you click "OK". Then do a
"file save as" and name it. Use the JPG format. I created
a new folder in my C:\ drive called "My Pix". You must know
what directory the Pix is in when you want to attach it to a
message.
The main idea is to produce a Pix that fits in your viewer
window. Then it will print on one piece of paper. Sizes of
20 to 60 ( 80 MAX!!! ) Kilobytes are best for email. Use
the JPG format. Now, test it out.
Open a new message window and attach the pix. Then
double-click it and open it. It should fit in your viewer
window. If it is too big, go back and resize it again. If
all is well, send it to the group and your friends. If not,
go back and work on it. You will find out what works
after a few tries.
All scanning programs are different. EXPERIMENT!!!
People will appreciate your efforts when they receive
beautiful pix they can print and save. Post any general
questions to the "Pix & Scan"group. If you are new to
this, need help or to join the group, send mail to me.
Here are 2 websites with great info to help you.
