My father James M. Jones, was born in Crosby, ND,   July 30, 1916.
His  parents were Orlin Monte Jones and May Louise Gunning Jones.
Orlin's father  was also James M. Jones.  It is my understanding that
Orlin owned and  operated a hardware store in Crosby, somewhere between
1900 and 1918.  My  grandparents were married in 1909, however I do not
know if it was there or  in Washington, DC, the home of my grandmother.  He is
listed in the Gunning  family bible as having come from Crosby.  Orlin also
was a member of Co. "I"  ND Volunteers, and served in the Philippines.  I have a
letter written by him  to his mother, dated Aug.1898, that had been reprinted
in a newspaper.  The  editor's note at the beginning of the letter, stated
that Orlin was "an  Olmsted County boy", and had been attending "the Red
  River
university". I can only assume that when he enlisted he was living in
Minnesota.  I also  believe, that my grandparents brought their family to
  Washington, DC about  1918.

I will be most happy for you to include any of this info on your Divide
Co. page and would be most grateful if you have any info to share with me.

Hi all, I have been told that my grandfather Lars E. Robertson had the first hardware store in Fortuna.  I would like some verification of this if it is possible.  I do have papers that show he purchased land in Divide Co. in 1919.  I am interested in knowing whether he did indeed have a hardware store there, when he sold his land and anything that maybe connected to him.  He was married to Rachel Boe at the time.

Story and obit for Anne Johnston
 Date:     Sat, 22 Apr 2000 14:34:50 -0700

I found no mention on your web site of anyone doing lookups, but.....  I'm
looking for two stories in the local paper, the first concerns my
great, great aunt Anne Chapman Johnston's 100th birthday in 1925, the second
her death in 1926. I do not know her birthdate, but do know that her birthday was
early in the year because her niece Martha Chapman Tyndall died in
Crosby on 2/21/25 and a copy of her obit in a Minn. paper had just the
start of a story mentioning an article in your paper about Anne
Johnston's 100th birthday. I only know that she died in 1926, no better
date. I believe a small inter-related group of Johnstons, Chapmans, and
Tyndalls went to ND from Minnesota in the late 1800s. My line went south
from MN and then west to OR. I'd be glad to pay for copying and postage
if someone could do some browsing in 1925 and 1926 microfilms. Please
advise.

McKay, I have been told was a middle name and not a maiden name.  She was my gg-grandmother.  My grandmother told me that she was born in Scotland, emmigrated to Canada and then on to Kermit, ND.  I don't know when she located in Kermit.  I was told that she died in the 1950's.  She might have worked as a domestic.  Her husband supposedly died in Glasgow, Scotland.

Also, I am looking for any info on George Rait who died in 1994.  His parents were Robert Rait and Wilimina Morrison.  George was somehow related to Henrietta Gray, but I don't know how.  George was born in Kermit and later lived in Crosby at the time of his death.

Hi,

I researching family in Divide County, North Dakota. My
great-grandmother, Esther Hill Hazelwood, lived in Crosby some time in the very early
1900s. She may have worked for, or been friends with, a Bloomer family and a
Brewster family. Esther was from the Boisevain, Manitoba area. She may
have had two children with her, Rose and William Hazelwood. They later moved
to Minot, ND.

Esther had a brother, Ellis Hill, who according to BLM records had land
in nearby Daniels County, Montana.

I am very eager to find out more about these missing years in my family's history.

Thanks for your time,

the coroner.  The paper said his fathers name was Frank but I still do not
know the mothers name. It also said that Frank and his wife bought land In

about 20 years ago my aunt gave me some notes she had
about her and my father's grandmother, Carrie Everson.  Apparently there was some sort of history of Divide County that has the following references.

Do you have any
Idea what the reference is and if/where it would be available?

Bill Everson
-----------------------------
Page 127- Noonan City
The city of Noonan's location on the homestead of a widow,
Mrs Carrie Everson's 5 children who were living on the claim at the time the railroadfunished the roadbed for its
tracks in 1907.

p138 A few young folks did go either to Minot or Williston
to get married.
Arthur Wells (Joe's??? uncle) + Hannah Everson got married.
Hannah's mother, Mrs Carrie Everson was the one that filed on
the townsite of Noonan.  Her shack was the first house in Noonan it is now part of Fred Heuer's house.  The building was J. J. Gatts ??? store which also was the P.O.
One of the next ones was the hotel built by Henry Nelson
and Arthur Wells which boasted of the first phonograph - the Everson
brothers pool hall bought by Alex Begin??? and owned by him till it burned.
---------------------------------------------
Will ?rosse? I??s brother + Joe's younger ??? = Arthur
Wells ???
--------------------------------------------------
I don't know the name of Carrie's husband, who apparently
died before her.  Their children were:
Cornelius who married Gladys ??
Albert E, who married Anna
Charlie, who married Lois
John E who married Mary
Anton E who married Olive
Hannah who married Arthur Wells, moved to New Mex and
worked as a forest ranger,  They had a daughter, Eva who lived in Billings, Mont

I believe Carrie was the daughter of Christ Olson of
Noonan, ND

Based on some additional searching and records in Polk County,
MN I think
Carrie's name might be Kari and her husband John.

Subject :     Re: Looking for Peter & Alice Jensen

I am looking for any information on a Peter & Alice E. Jensen. They lived in Ambrose, North Dakota. He is listed as a barber and owning his own shop in the 1920 and 1930 US Census.  We believe his wife was a Alice E. Tutt, who is my husband's great  Aunt.  Her brother's obituary, of March 1940, states that she was living in Ambrose. We believe she was born in December 1888 in either Illinois or Iowa.

I would appreciate any information on this couple and if there was any children.

Subject :     Divide county

I am working on my family history and some of my family lived in  Divide county, mostly Smoky Butte township, I believe.  The names  were Pete and Bessie Foss, Ingerinus Lobeck and his family, and  Kari /  Carrie Peterson / Petterson.

I am also interested in the beginnings of the Non-partisan league and  its activities in Divide county before 1920 or so and what part any  of the above names may have played in it.

I am trying to find any information on the family of Olaf A. Rude (1882- 28 Apr.1944) and his wife Lona (1881-?)  They were born in Minnesota and moved to Divide County around 1913.  They had six children, Levern, Leroy, Doris, Vera, Paul and Dennis.  Their approx. birth dates are 1904-1925.  There may have been other children.  Other Rude relations lived in the Mentor, ND area.  Sometimes the name is spelled Rud or Ruud.

Any help in finding this family wil be greatly appreciated.
