Chickasaw County is known as the 'Mother County' as parts of Clay, Calhoun, and Webster counties branched off from part of it.

Chickasaw Co. was est. 9 Feb. 1836 and was named for the great Indian Tribe that occupied the northern part of Miss. The county, when organized was much larger than it is now. It included most of what is now Calhoun County and the north part of clay County and the extreme north east part of Webster co. Chicksaw contained 1,077 square miles of territory and now composes 507 square miles. Area was lost to Calhoun Co. in 1852, Clay and Webster in l872.

The county seat was organized in 1837 and named Houston. In 1877, the legislature enacted a law dividing the county into two judicial districts with Houston as First and Okolona as Second. Houlka was an old Indian name and is considered the oldest community. Today, there are four mayors of inc. towns : Houston, Okolona, Houlka and Woodland.

The Chickasaw Co. Gen/His Soc. organized in 1979.

The first quarterly CTP was Apri.-May-June 1982.

Membership:

Membership in the society is open to anyone interested in perserving and recording the history of Chickasaw County. Dues are $20 per year. Membership entitles one to receive 4 copies of Chickasaw Times Past. Each issue contains 50 pages of courthouse records, family histories, cemetery records, and free queries. Local members of the society have helped many descendants of the peoneers make contact with other family members.
