Washington County Queries

1. Try to be as specific as possible: Where in the county, approximate dates if available, etc..

2. Put the SURNAME in caps only in the body of the email - in the subject line, you must put "Query: <SURNAME>" or it may get lost in the email filters.

3. If you do not know which county, do not post your query here - post it at the Maine GenWeb site.

Until I get an automated query system arranged, it may take a couple of days to get your queries posted. Please be patient. Thanks!

Place Your Query

Note: Due to the excessive amount of 'dead' email addresses and with the last queries posted here from first quarter, 2003, I am refraining from posting the past queries at this time. I urge you to place a fresh query if you had an old one up here, instead of relying on the past data. Thank you.

Looking for Washington County KIDDER info from 1800 on .. which I might not have collected during my ten years of researching my Kidder ancestors who were centered around Princeton, ME, after 1850. My ancestor was Joseph KIDDER of Princeton, ME, and his grandfather, Calvin KIDDER, moved to St. Stephen, NB, in the 1780's. He died young leaving an infant son, J. Calvin KIDDER, b1799 NB. His mother, Mrs. Mary (Wilkins) KIDDER,
remarried to Ambrose BATES and had many children with him.
Some missing information in our research is in regards to Jonathan / John
KIDDER
, Joseph's older brother.

Looking for any and all information on the WILKINS men and/or families in
Washington County (and Aroostook County). My ancestor, Samuel WILKINS,
moved his family from Unity, Me, to Amity, ME, around 1830. Samuel's
father seems to be one of the three WILKINS men who were living in "Maine"
around 1770 and were soldiers in the Revolutionary War. (Cannot find
additional information about those men.) Samuel's daughter, Mary Jane WILKINS, married J. Calvin KIDDER, and they lived in Amity, Calais, and Princeton, ME, and had 6 children live to at least teen-age years.

"Calvin" and Mary's son, Joseph KIDDER, married his cousin, Clarissa
WILKINS
, daughter of Samuel's son, George WILKINS. George had moved
his large family to York County, NB, for a while, but, upon his wife's death,
most of the family moved back to Maine. (George remarried to the mother-in-law of two of his daughters.) Two older sons of Samuel WILKINS seem to have remained in Aroostook County. Among the missing is his other daughter (Elizabeth?? Electra??), who might have remained in Unity, ME, when the family moved. I have been looking for information on Samuel Wilkins' birth family for years.

I am looking for information & ancestry on Abigail JOY wife of Isaac
STROUT
of Harrington. She died 28 Feb 1840, ae 50 [gravestone].

"Early Narraguagus River Families of Washington County, Maine" has that
she was probably daughter of Francis JOY of Steuben & Harrington. I haven't been able to find out much about Francis either: wife? dates? children?
All I know is a Francis JOY was at Steuben 1790 census, & Harrington,
1800-1810 censuses with wife & several children. He was age 26-45 on
both 1800 & 1810 which implies born 1765 - 1774. [He may have been at
Harrington 1820, but I don't have access to that census.] Any pointers on information for Abigail & Francis JOY would be appreciated.

I am looking for sources to find the ancestry of Eliza Young "of the provinces" whose marriage was recorded in the Eastport Newspaper as 1825. I have also been unable to find the ancestry of her husband James William/Willet Carpenter although there is a large family of Carpenters originiating with Archeleus Carpenter of St. Johns. My great grandfather, Thomas Edwin Carpenter was born 1828 in Eastport although I have not been able to locate his birth record. Any ideas or clues as to Eliza's ancestry would be much appreciated.

I am seeking the parents of my 4th great grandfather, JAMES WILLIAM / WILLET CARPENTER who lived in Troy, Waldo County ME but died or
disappeared by 1839. I believe he is closley related to Charles S.
Carpenter
b. 1791 who lived in Eastport in 18 30's to 1860's and there
was a mortgage or land transfer made by J. W. Carpenter to Charles S.
Carpenter
about 1837. Charles S. Carpenter had a son, William C. Carpenter born in St. Andrews NB, June 30th 1803, and other children born in Eastport and it is possible that James "Willet" Carpenter is his son or a brother born in St. Andrews but I cannot find a record for him. The only record I can find connecting James Willet Carpenter to Eastport is his marriage to Eliza Young "Of the Provinces" in Eastport Sentinel. I would be most grateful for any help on the Eastport CARPENTERS. Thank you for any clues.

I am looking for information on the Harmon family living in Calais, Maine, circa 1850 until about 1917. I will provide all the information I already have to reduce duplicate searches. I am particularly interested in tying Arthur Thomas Harmon born March 23, 1883, to his father who may have been Frank Melville Harmon. There are some inconsistencies that have hampered our being absolutely sure of the link.

I am looking for a birth record for my ggrandfather, JC Fremont Fowler --that is the name he went by as an adult, although it may not be the name he was given at birth. He was born in Calais in January 1858 (although I am not ruling out December 1857 or February 1858). His mother's name was Elizabeth; she would have been in her late 20s at the time of this birth. I would appreciate hearing from anyone with info about any male births in Calais from this time period.

Is anyone researching the family of Deola C. Getchell, a grain dealer in Machias ? He was born Aug 6, 1852 and died June 19, 1929. He was the son of Marshfield and Martha (Holmes) Getchell. His wife was Ida B. Harmon. They had at least 2 sons, Thomas and Guy. There is a picture of D.C.Getchell in the History of Machias that has a strong resemblance to a picture I have in a family album I inherited (unlabeled of course) I thought it was a picture of one of the sons of my husband's ancestor Henry G. Mitchell of Industry (whose wife was a Getchell) Henry also called a son "Guy".

My great-grandparents were Niles C. SIMMILKIER (born Madrid, Spain, in 1841; died in Minnesota abt 1900; served 1864-1865 in the 31st Maine Regiment, was honorably discharged as a sergeant) and Laura F. NASH (born in Washington Co., Maine in 1847; died in Santa Clara, California 21 February 1922). They were married in Washington County on 4 December 1865. I seek a vital record showing where and by whom they were married.
I believe that two of their three children were born in Harrington: (1) my aunt Mildred Estelle SIMMILKIER, born 21 October 1866, who died in Minnesota in 1944; and (2) my aunt Martha Nash SIMMILKIER, born about 1868-70, whom I met in Harrington in 1940 and who died in Harrington (I believe unmarried) about 1945-46. (My grandmother Laura Beulah SIMMILKIER, their younger sister, was born in 1874 in Anoka, Minnesota.) I seek vital records confirming the birth of Mildred and the birth, death and burial site of Martha. Laura NASH, a daughter of Levi NASH, had three older siblings: a brother, killed in the Civil War at Petersburg, and two older sisters, Mary (B 1840) and Jane (B 1845), who died young. Seeking information about my G-Grandparents. They were Robert Edward MITCHELL & Emma BURNS. Robert was b. 8 May 1855 & d. 3 Aug 1944 in Calais. Emma was b. 14 Jun 1857 in Milltown NB (?) & d. 14 Aug 1935 in Calais. I believe Robert was the s/o Thomas MITCHELL & Julia A BONNESS. I have very little (unverified) information on these parents. Robert may have had a brother William and a sister Jennie P. More on Jennie P.: Internet contacts claim Jennie P. MITCHELL m. Thomas McGRAW abt 1870. This contact claims that her death certificate states "Place of death, Calais, place of birth, Old Ridge, NB name of father, Thomas MITCHELL, name of mother Julia BONNESS. Place of birth of parents NB. Occupation lumberman, physician reporting death J.M. Dearon, or Deason, Miltown New Brunswick. On the State of Maine certification of vital record they state her birth as May 1, 1853. This information is the only lead I have available for further research
on the MITCHELL family. I have nothing else on which BONNESS Julia may be from. Emma BURNS may be the daughter of Simon BURNS & (unk) She apparently had a brother James BURNS who lived in Milltown, NB.
James had a sister Annie ELLS who was listed as living with him in the 1901 Census along with a niece Maud MITCHELL. ( d/o the above Robert MITCHELL & Emma BURNS. ) Robert & Emma had 8 other children including my grandmother Annie T.
