  1. I overlooked a vital piece of information from January.  My apologies, but I must list these deletions from the web site.  Sadly, I am in the process of removing a substantial number of families from the USGenWeb Waldo County families page.  This has been necessitated by the presence of invalid e-mail addresses.  If anyone had a family listed on this page and now discover that the name is missing it is because of a change in the contact address and I have no way of contacting those who originally volunteered to share their information.  I can see this as a simple oversight because I, too, changed my address when my original one was hijacked for other than honorable purposes.  If you were one of those who volunteered and would like to continue to share, please send me your new e-mail address and I will be more than happy to put your family back on the site.  The families page is located here.  The family names that I have had to remove are Bagley, Blethen, Bragdon, Brown, Dean(2) of Winterport, Doak, Eames, Fernald, Goodale/Goodell, Gushee, Hilt, Moses Hollis, Hopkins, Lamson, Miller, Richards, Rivers, Josiah Segar, Smith, Thomas, Waterhouse, Webb of Waldo, Whitaker and Wood.  19 Mar 05

  2. There are ten new inquiries for the month of March 2005.

  3. Please notice there is a new banner for this site in hopes of "spicing" things up.  This is courtesy of Rebecca Elliott-Akens.  Please bear with me as I experiment with the placement of the banner.  19 March 2005

There are two new photos on line.  One of Maple Grove School students in Thorndike, Maine, ca 1900 with an almost complete list of students names.  Secondly, the 1930 girls basketball team from Searsport High School, 1930.  Can anyone add any names to the identities in these photos? 18 Jan 05

  1. Now that we have 2004 behind us, I want to issue a proclamation of sorts.  I realize that I have been quite neglectful of my duties as the USGenWeb Waldo County Coordinator.  Therefore, I resolve that 2005 that I will make every effort to improve, add and correct the many areas of this site.  I must admit that 2004 started out with two, not just one, two people rear-ending my car and then to top it off I fell on the ice in my driveway.  I can, but refuse to use this and a couple of other medical issues as excuses for my failures and short comings.  I only ask that you, my faithful partners in this project, prod me into accomplishing the many goals that I would like to see here.  Also, it has become painfully aware to me that I cannot run this site alone so I have requested that a couple of people be added to help me with design, correspondence, thoughts and positive input and other various and sundry tasks that are required to make this the best site possible.  David Sylvester has agreed to be the list owner of mailing list, not to mention a valuable volunteer of several towns.  Also, my daughter, Rebecca, is my greatest encourager and very talented in artwork and design.  Probably most of the work that you see from her will be photos and layout of pages (my weakest points).  If anyone wants to contact either of them, please let me know and I will past it on.

  2. Also, there are many silent partners who help me constantly by answering inquiries, correcting my grammatical errors and most importantly, sharing innumerous hours of valuable research.  To all of you I can only say that your contributions) are vitally important to the success of this site.  If we were all local, I'd take each one of you out a steak dinner.  Thank you so very, very much.  Also, I want to thank each of you for tolerating my various disabilities and maladies.  My motto for 2005 is "Come alive in 2005, Tom."  If I find that my handicap is significantly interfering with my position as Waldo County Coordinator, I will not longer disappoint the fine people who visit here and deserve professional information and attractive design, I will not hesitate to step put of the way for someone much more qualified than I.  I am NOT resigning nor do I wish to, I just want to make all of you aware that you come first and should not be subjected to my procrastination.  Thank you all, each and every one of you.  You are a true blessing to me. 3 Jan 05

  3. As of 31 Jan 05, there are seventeen new inquiries posted.   Please take a moment to visit the query page to see if anyone has a connection with these new inquiries.  Thank you.  31 Jan 05

PLEASE NOTICE:

  • It has been brought to my attention that at least one "volunteer" for the Waldo County USGenWeb site has attempted to charge for services rendered.  Please, if you are a volunteer, do not do this.   The purpose of this site is to provide FREE genealogical and historical information for those who have requested it.  We all have invested many, many hours and dollars in our genealogical quests, but those of us who have offered our knowledge, time and talents, have done so with the understanding that we are sharing these things, not selling them.  I am very sorry that I have to even write this note, but feel that the stance of this site and the policy of USGenWeb MUST be enforced.  If anyone discovers that one of our volunteers is charging money for being a volunteer, please notify me ASAP.

  • As much as I hate to address this subject because, at this time, we have only one town without a volunteer: Should any volunteer wish to be relieved of their responsibilities, please let me know.  That being said, I believe that we have the greatest group of volunteers in the entire USGenWeb system and am not asking anyone to step down.  My position as Waldo County coordinator is to attempt to have volunteers for each town in the county.  If one has chosen to resign his/her position, I would appreciate a notification of your decision.  Thank you for all of your hard work and diligence.

  • WALDO CEMETERIES. As of today, 80 cemeteries are named in the Waldo County cemetery list, many with driving directions. Again, thanks to all volunteers who have supplied information on these cemeteries. We still need information on quite a few Waldo town cemeteries--please see the list for the towns still missing cemetery data.
  • 1790 Census Towns. Many of the town names used in the 1790 census either no longer exist or included one or more present-day towns. In an effort to better relate the 1790 Census data to present day towns, I am listing for each 1790 census town the names of current towns included. Currently I have completed Hancock County, which contains most of the area which would eventually become Waldo County.

  • WALDO CEMETERIES. The beginnings of the Waldo County cemetery list are now posted. Thank you to all volunteers who have responded to my requests for information on cemeteries in "their town". The list is not yet complete, but I will add new information to it as I receive it. If you have information on any Waldo County cemeteries, please contact me. Your input is greatly appreciated!

  • WALDO CEMETERIES. I am presently working on a list of all known Waldo County cemeteries and their locations. In connection with this list I have sent email requests to Waldo town volunteers asking for information on cemeteries in "their town". I hope soon there will be a complete list of Waldo cemeteries on the Waldo GenWeb site. If you are not a town volunteer and have information on any Waldo County cemeteries, please contact me. Your input is greatly appreciated!

  • In On Board: the Newsletter of the Board for Certification of Genealogists (May, 1997), author Carmen J. Finley's article "OnLine: US GenWeb Project" reviews the history of the USGenWeb project, how it began and where it is today. In addition, the author recommends several USGenWeb (county) sites to explore. I am happy to note that Waldo County, Maine was one of the eight county sites mentioned by the author. The others include Sonoma County, California; Cherokee County, Georgia; Macoupin County, Illinois; Howard County, Indiana; Somerset County, Maryland; Chester County, Pennsylvania and Augusta County, Virginia.

  • NEW LOOK. In response to comments that the pages at this site were difficult to read because of the choice of background, I have eliminated the background graphic, and for the time being, am using a plain white background. I hope this improves readability for those who had a problem.

  • NEW VOLUNTEER. In addition to her own responsibilities as Knox Co. Maine, GenWeb coordinator, Sena Spear Havasy has volunteered to answer lookups for Searsmont, (formerly Quantabacook) Maine. Thanks, Sena!
  • NEW QUERIES/OLD QUERIES. Queries for the period since April 16 have finally been added. Apologies to those who wondered what happened to their queries. Since the query page is now becoming quite large (and slow to load), it may be necessary to split it chronologically or alphabetically, or to purge older queries. If you have strong feelings for or against any of these solutions, please let me know.

  • NEW LOOK-UP VOLUNTEER. Ralph E. Hillman has graciously consented to serve as a "lookup volunteer" for the town of Troy. He has a huge amount of information on Troy, Maine where his 3rd great grandfather, Charles Hillman was the first town clerk. In addition, he compiled Vital Records of Troy, published in 1995 by Picton Press. He has compiled all census records through 1910 and all tax records 1820-1885; also over 2000 land records for inhabitants of Troy. Thanks, Ralph!

  • CALLING FOR LOOK-UP VOLUNTEERS. If you have special interest in a particular Waldo County town and access to vital records or other information for that town, I would like to encourage you to volunteer to do brief "lookups" for families in that town. Please go to the Waldo County towns page to see which towns need "adopting". NOTE: I neglected to list all Waldo County towns on the towns page previously. I have now added the those towns, however some are missing dates of incorporation. If you can supply any of these missing dates, please contact me. Thanks.
  • WALDO COUNTY AND TOWNS BIBLIOGRAPHY. A more comprehensive listing of vital records sources for Waldo County and its towns has been added. Your contributions are welcomed.

  • 1790 CENSUS LISTINGS. We hope to complete all 1790 Census listings for Hancock County in the next couple of weeks. Bob Bowers whose name many of you will recognize from his helpful postings to the Northeast-Roots newsgroup/mailing list, has graciously volunteered to provide data files for the balance of the Hancock Co. towns not yet listed on this site. This will save much time and data input, and the results should be a complete 1790 Census for Hancock Co. Maine (which includes early Waldo County towns). Thanks, Bob!

  • WHERE DID THEY COME FROM? The 1800 Maine Census contained a new question, "From Whence Emigrated?". Depending on how they interpreted this question, some respondents named their place of birth, others their previous place of residence. In either case, this is a valuable piece of information for those researching early Maine families. Go to the 1800 Maine Census for Hancock County to find listings for Hancock County towns later located in Waldo County.
