This son of M. L. and Mary J. (Tullis) Smith was born in Winchester, Illinois, January 13, 1876. His father is a native of Ohio and was born near Lebanon, on a farm, May 23, 1836, and came to Illinois in 1860. He had learned the station branch of railroad work and for a number of years alternated between that and the grain business. In 1867 he was married to Miss Mary J. Tullis, of Danville, Illinois, and in 1870 was sent to Winchester as station agent of the C. B. and Q. and since that time has resided there. Fritz E. Smith was reared and educated at Winchester and graduated from the high school. He then went to Decatur and took a full course at Brown's Commercial College. After graduating from that institution he kept books in Decatur for three years and then, returning to Winchester, performed a like service for the Winchester Milling Company for one year. At the expiration of this time he purchased the candy kitchen of B. H. DeLapp and conducted it for three months. Then the business of William Farrington was consolidated with his under the firm name of Smith & Farrington and was continued under that name until 1901 when Mr. Smith bought Farrington out and has since conducted the business in his own name. He manufactures fine candies, deals in all sorts of confections and has a news stand in connection.
August 25, 1898, he was married to Miss Leona Gibler of White Hall. One son, Leroy, aged three years, has been born to them. Mr. Smith is a member of the Methodist church. He is a staunch republican, an A.O.U.W. and an M.W. of A. He is a bright young man and has won an enviable place among the business representatives of Winchester.
