Fall CIG Symposium

Mark Saturday, November 1, 2008 on your calendars for an all-day session on Enhancing Your Use of Computers and Software for Genealogy and Family History. The Symposium will help you make the best use of computer resources in your research and documentation of your families’ histories.

The Symposium will be held at our regular meeting site at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 2300 S. Patton Court, Denver, Colorado. Registration will be from 9:30 to 10 a.m. Sessions will be run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A sloppy joe lunch will be available for a donation of $5.

The first morning session will begin with panelists who have special knowledge of the genealogy software programs You will be able to see what each program is able to do and ask the panelists questions. Genealogy programs to be presented include: Legacy, Family Tree Maker, Roots Magic, The Master Genealogist, and Reunion for Mac.

Two concurrent sessions will follow the genealogy software panel:

  • Scanning will include how to scan photos and documents to be imported into your genealogy program. Pictures and documents add so much to our understanding of our families. Scanning allows us to preserve and share these items.

  • AniMap and GenSmart will cover how to use these tools to enhance your genealogy research and software. AniMap includes more than 2,000 different maps showing the changing county boundaries in each state from colonial times to the present. It can be used to locate cities, towns, townships, courthouses, cemeteries, and more, including places no longer in existence. GenSmart is a software utility that uses artificial intelligence to analyze your existing genealogy file and produce research recommendations.

The afternoon will start with each of the genealogy software panelists doing a beginning session of their specific program. These sessions will allow you to see the Legacy, Family Tree Maker, Roots Magic, The Master Genealogist, and Reunion for Mac programs in more depth. The afternoon will conclude with a session on Top Genealogy websites.

The cost for the all-day Symposium is $5 for members and $10 for non-members. Please join us on November 1 for this very interesting and fun day. There will be door prizes. Mail the registration form by October 21. You may also RSVP to Sandy Ronayne at sandyronayne@comcast.net after October 21.
