Lieutenant Robson, commanding HM gunboat Forward, whilst riding in the neighborhood of Esquimalt in company with Mr Skinner Jr, was thrown with great violence from his horse, receiving very serious, if not fatal, injuries. He was immediately conveyed to the Royal Hospital and promptly attended to by Dr Forbes, Royal Navy. Yesterday morning he was conscious, but owing to the spine being injured, he is completely paralyzed and unable to move. The accident was caused by a sheep running between the legs of the horse which he was riding. Mr Skinner was also thrown from his horse at the same time, but luckily was not hurt. Mr Robson's injuries were caused by his horse rolling over him. It is stated that the command of Forward devolves upon Hon H D Lascelles, Lieutenant on board Topaze; Nov 6 - We regret to have to announce the death of this popular officer, who expired Nov 5 at Naval Hospital, Esquimalt. Flags throughout the town were lowered to half-mast during the whole of yesterday. Funeral will take place at Victoria burial ground. Funeral of Comm Robson, late of HM gunboat Forward will take place Nov 7 from Hudson's Bay Company wharf, where the body will be landed from Esquimalt. Naval procession will leave Hudson's Bay Company wharf, pass along Wharf st into Yates, up Yates into Government, along Government into Fort, up Fort to Douglas, and thence to the cemetery. Friends of deceased not belonging to the service are requested to form in procession in the rear of the naval procession.... on arriving abreast of Hudson's Bay Company wharf, the Officers, sailors and Marines with body of deceased were landed. The naval procession was immediately formed to do the last honors to the gallant officer. First were a company of marines; next the band of Her/His Majesty's Ship Topaze, then the body of Comm Robson in a coffin resting on a gun carriage drawn by sailors. It was covered by the flag of his country, surmounted with his cocked hat and sword. Following the coffin were the mourners, among whom were T J Skinner, Esq and his 3 sons; G T Gordon, Esq and 2 sons; and Archdeacon Wright. Then came Forward's ships company. After them came Capts Richards and Spencer, officers of Forward, Hecate and Topaze and His Excellency Gov Douglas. Then followed a long procession of citizens, who desired to testify their high respect for the deceased. Funeral moved on slowly, while the band played 'Dead March' till it reached Christ's Church. Some 500 or 600 persons accompanied the procession besides those who had formed regularly into line. In all there could not have been less than 1500 persons who attended the funeral, making it the largest that ever occurred here. The usual salute was fired by the Marines over the grave of deceased, thus closing his connection forever with the service of which he was an ornament. Deceased had distinguished himself in the service several times by his gallant conduct. Once he volunteered into Dauntless in the West Indies when no one else would, owing to her officers and crew suffering severely from yellow fever. He also volunteered to bring an American vessel from the coast of Africa to Philadelphia which had lost her officers by yellow fever. In the last Russian war he was in the Baltic fleet before Sweaborg, and is highly spoken of for his gallant conduct. We have few other particulars of his history except the services which he has rendered to this Colony. His rescue of the crew of the American brig Consort on the West Coast Vancouver Island, nearly a year ago, for which our American residents sent a memorial to Pres Buchanan, and his bombardment of the Indians at Cape Mudge, are the principal acts in which he distinguished himself here. Died at Hillside, Victoria, Vancouver Island, Dec 22, 1861, Hon John Work, Member of Legislative Council and Chief Factor Hudson's Bay Co, aged 70. Funeral from the Fort yard. Remains will be followed to the grave by the attaches of Hudson's Bay Co and by numerous friends of deceased.
The late Hon John Work entered the employ of Hudson's Bay Co in 1814, and served on the east of the Rocky Mtns till 1822, when he came to the west side, and in the course of a few years established at Colville a very productive farm - the first attempt at agriculture in British or American possessions west of the Rocky Mtns, and an achievement of no small importance in those early days, when the fur traders had to be mainly dependent upon themselves for the cultivation of grain and the production of other supplies necessary for their own subsistence and the support of outlying posts. He was subsequently for several years in charge of trapping parties, hunting amongst the hostile Blackfeet, in the great plains east of Colville, or in quest of beaver amidst the reeds and swamps on the Bay of San Francisco and on the lower Sacremento.
From 1835 to 1849 Mr Work was in charge of Hudson's Bay Co's business at Fort Simpson, on the Northwest coast of British Columbia. In the latter year he was stationed at this place as one of the managers of the Company's affairs west of the Rocky Mtns, and soon after was appointed MLC of Vancouver Island, a position he retained till the day of his death.
Until the formation of this Colony, Mr Work had always expressed a fond intention of spending the evening of his days in his native land, the North of Ireland; but the prospect of a civilized home on this island, under British institutions, induced him to settle here, where he acquired considerable property and became one of the earliest and most enterprising farmers in Victoria District.
His many virtues are so well known that it is needless to dwell upon them at length. In all the relations of life Mr Work's career has been most exemplary; and we have it from one of his earliest and most intimate friends (and to whom we are indebted for most of the above biographical particulars) that throughout his life Mr Work invariably won the respect and esteem of all in every station of life with whom he became connected. His familiar form will henceforth be missed by the many friends and well-wishers with whom, in health, he was wont to exchange greetings in the streets of Victoria.
By children he was especially beloved. Nothing pleased him more than to gather his numerous children and grandchildren about him; and thus surrounded by those in whose society it was his chief delight to live, he passed away. His end was serene and hopeful, a fitting close to a life of benevolence, integrity; and usefulness.
Funeral - Dec 27, 3... [Colonist, 1861-12-20*]
