Tax lists used in conjunction with census, church, land and military records are helpful to trace migration. Be familiar with county formation dates, boundaries, tax laws and social history. Copy tax records for as many years as possible. Migrations appear when the individual disappears from the county's tax list and reappears on another's county tax list. If an individual appears to be taxed in two counties at the same time there was probably two men with the same name. Once married a son was normally listed on the tax lists. When men obtained the upper taxable age they may have remained on the real estate property tax list but disappeared from the personal property tax list.
